More About Us

Our
History

Little Log Cabin Montessori School first
opened its doors in the winter of 1999 under
the direction of Ivy Jordan and Carrie Lyons.
The school was located close to the Raymond
town line in a little log cabin with a classroom
of eight children from the ages of eighteen months to six years. In 2002, the school expanded its walls and continued to grow.

In 2004, L.L.C.M.S. came under the direction
of Rosemary Barsalow Jordan, M.Ed. As more
families embraced the Montessori
philosophy, the school grew and moved to
Tandberg Trail in Windham in 2008.

The Montessori
Philosophy

The Montessori philosophy teaches that the
child is in the process of developing themself.
Thus, the child is free to choose the work that
draws their attention. They are able to work at
their own pace in a non-competitive
environment. The classroom is multi-age. The
materials are designed to help all children
develop their coordination, concentration,
independence, and sense of order. This is done
through purposeful learning exercises.

At the Little Log Cabin Montessori School,
children learn to read and write using a
phonics-based approach along with whole
language. The children use concrete math
materials that help them grasp advanced
mathematical concepts earlier than other
educational methods. The children engage in a
wide variety of cultural activities including:
geography and map work, listening to music,
stories, looking at art from around the world.

Parent Reflections

“Our son has excelled in the nurturing and fun environment at L.L.C.M.S. The teachers have guided and encouraged his strengths with grace and compassion. The teachers have given our son a learning experience we will treasure forever. Little Log Cabin Montessori
School was a perfect choice for our son.”

The Secord Family
Casco, Maine

“The success of Montessori isn’t measured by how many letters or numbers your child learns, rather it’s by the respect and kindness
your child learns to show others and themselves.”

Scott and Tammy Morales
Windham, Maine

“Watching Rosemary interact with the children in the school is absolutely inspiring. Clearly she was born to do this work, and that commitment sets a precedent for all who work
for her.”
